Detailed Description of GA3-exporter's Excel & BigQuery export data sets:
Google Analytics Dimensions and Metrics

Google Analytics sunset

Introduction

On this page, you'll find detailed tables showcasing the metrics and dimensions of each data set in our Google Analytics 3 / Universal Analytics exports. These tables are your guide to understanding what data is available in the Excel files and how it can be leveraged to fulfill your analytical objectives. Note, the data set in BigQuery are the same as those exported to Excel.
All datasets are aggregated data, not raw data. This means that metrics are summed up or averages for a certain group of dimensions and dates. Data sets are exported for different time frames as displayed below and may have different time granularity (daily*, monthly, yearly). Please note, as the the Google API does not offer the export of raw data, there is also no way to download really all data for a property (also not with other tools or methods). Therefore we provide and extensive set of reports build by our analytics experts which cover the vast majority of marketing analytics use cases.

*daily granularly is only available on the professional package

Time Frames

To cater to various reporting requirements, we've incorporated three distinct time frames into our reports

All Time: This offers a panoramic view of your data, spanning the entirety of your data collection period. It's ideal for long-term trend analysis and strategic planning.
12 Months: Focusing on the most recent year, this view provides a detailed month-by-month analysis, perfect for understanding recent trends and making timely adjustments.
Retention Period: Some detailed data is only available in Google Analytics for a limited time. This depends on the Data Retention setting in your Google Analytics account. We detect this time range and export data accordingly.

The time ranges are indicated as part of the file name.

Understanding Sampling

Sampling is an artifact of the Google Analytics API and is not specific to GA3-exporter. It will happen automatically if the raw data set is too large. Sampling can only occur in the detailed reports which are subject to the above mentioned retention Period. Reports are generated on a subset of the complete data and metrics are scaled accordingly such that the totals match reality. Sampling is not a necessarily a problem in general as totals and tendencies in that data are mostly conserved. However for less frequent dimensions values (e.g. a lower traffic pages or rare events) numbers may differ or data may even be missing. The XL package will request data in 5 date ranges for most data sets which reduced sampling approximately by a factor of 5. Sampling and sampling levels per table are given in the report_summary.txt file in the zip file. For XL packages, which don't provide a Excel zip file, the report_summary can be downloaded directly from the reports overview page.

Other Limitations

Some dimensions may see a lot of different values (so called high cardinality dimensions). In this case exports will be truncated after 1 million rows. Note, this is not directly related to the number of users or page views that a GA property/view shows. It is instead related to the number of different values (e.g. different page paths, event names, etc.) in that view. This limit can be hit by very large properties.
The 1 million rows are basically a sample of all rows leading to similar effects as explained in the "understanding sampling" section. For behaviour_page_allTime_monthly and conversion_ecommerce_products_allTime_monthly we extends this limit to 5 million rows, by requesting data in 5 date ranges from the Google API. For the XL package we process most reports that subject to high cardinality within 5 date ranges (i.e. 5 million rows limit). For page / ecommerce products reports we export up to 20 /10 million rows. If such a limit is applied this is indicated for that table  in report_summary.txt.
Also, in rare cases we see the Google Analytics API return too little data for some time ranges. We can't unfortunately influence this behavior so we recommend to check data for completeness after downloading your reports.
User numbers will only be exported after 2016-09-01. In fact the Google API will not return user data before that date for most properties anyway.
User numbers are actually unique users. Use this metric with care. If you sum up unique users over several days/months or different dimensions values the sum is usually larger than the actual number of unique users in that date range or segment. This is a general property of "unique" metrics and cannot be circumvented. Use the metrics new_users or session as proxy which do not have this limitation in general.

This document describes version 2 of the report which is the current one. If you are looking for v1 data sets descriptions have a look here.
